Telstra Dome (formally known as Colonial Stadium) is one of Australia's premier entertainment venues located at the Docklands Precinct in Melbourne.
With the renaming of the stadium, the team at Signcraft were called upon to remove and dismantle the Colonial Stadium signs and undertake the design, manufacture and installation process for the re-branding of the stadium to Telstra Dome.
The new signs were a different proportion to the Colonial signs. Consequently, the structure supporting the original signs was removed from the building and reduced in length and increased in height in order to support the Telstra Dome signage. The supporting structure also included a catwalk in the lower sections to enable servicing of the new signage.
The installation process involved an immense amount of planning and coordination. The oversized load was delivered to the stadium on two extended deck semi-trailers which were accompanied to the site by a Vic Roads escort.
The northbound lanes of Wurundjeri Way were closed and traffic diverted for the duration of the installation process. The installation process took approximately 10 hours and involved 12 crane operators, riggers and dogmen. A 300 tonne crane was used to lift the sign into place. During the installation of the western roof sign AFL House was evacuated.
